2011 New York Giants – Super Bowl Champs

February 5, 2012

Just as we all predicted back in August... the New York Giants are your Super Bowl Champions of everything! What makes this Giants season remarkable... beyond them bringing home the most coveted of prizes... is the number of times, in the minds of fans, pundits, haters, etc., they hit the mat and weren't expected to get up... only to rise like Rocky Balboa and overcome. This team, truly, is at its best when their backs are against the wall. They're a team New York City citizens, whether they are supports of Big Blue or Gang Green, should be proud of. After all, they are the New York Giants. And their first name is "New York."

Tis The Season… Hall of Fame Season

Earlier this month, the 2012 National Baseball Hall of Fame class was announced, and on Saturday, we will learn the newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This time of year always draws a crowd of voices debating not only who belongs in the halls of fame and who does not, but also what the standards for induction should be—what it means (or should mean) for someone to be a hall of famer. Since the only opinions that end up counting are those of actual voters, what everyone else is really debating are the standards of their own personal halls of fame.

Without Wellington Mara, Coughlin Wouldn’t Be Here (And Neither Would The Giants)

Much has been made of when the late Wellington Mara supported then-Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi in making a draft-day trade to get Eli Manning in 2004. Another less-talked-about move that Mara should be credited for is hiring Tom Coughlin as the Giants coach in the first place. He was the only one that took a chance on him. Not even Accorsi wanted to hire the football lifer. Needless to say, it has paid off well for Mara’s franchise. In in his retirement speech, and his Hall of Fame speech, Coughlin should give thanks to the Giants patriarch who saved his career.

The Annual Pagan Celebration of Hailing Lombardi, An Israeli Perspective

The "hummus-muching Israeli" Roy Holler has made his contributions to the NY Sports Digest in many ways, typically behind-the-scenes. It was Holler who provided this superbly accurate depiction of Jay Cutler, as well as the dead-on rendition of the despicable Bart Scott. Today he has opted to contribute with his writing, giving us his perspective on what has become an American holiday.

Super Bowl XLV Just Kinda Stunk

Super Bowl XLV Just Kinda Stunk

By Leslie Monteiro -- Let’s call it what it is. Last night’s Super Bowl stunk. There’s no way around it. Talk about the final two minutes of the game, but if that’s the best moment of yesterday, it wasn’t a success. Everything went wrong from the beginning. At Cowboys Stadium, 400 fans could not watch the game because the temporary seats could not be completed in time. Let’s get this straight: the stadium workers failed to get the seats ready, despite knowing YEARS ago that they'd be hosting a pretty big game. Talk about ample time. That’s beyond irresponsible. It reflects incompetency on their part. Could anyone imagine this happening at Yankee stadium? Or does that not count, since they can't sell out playoff games anyway?
