Survival Mode: Mike D’Antoni Looks To Salvage Job

If the resignation of Donnie Walsh was tough news for New York Knicks fans to bare, it could only be felt as a kick to the sternum for the man he brought in as coach. As if Mike D’Antoni hasn’t been bashed enough the last few months since the team was swept out of the playoffs, now he has to worry if he is simply on borrowed time. With Walsh gone, a new team president and general manager would all but certainly make changes as he sees fit-a coach of his own is always top of their list. D’Antoni’s “offense first, defense second…maybe" mentality has all but put him out of favor with anyone who follows the Knickerbockers and has him with one foot out of the door. Now with the Knicks future as cloudy as an April thunderstorm, the embattled coach is clinging for dear life even as everyone...

Donnie Walsh OUT: Knicks Relieve President Of Duties

June 3, 2011

As if the formerly-soft Dallas Mavericks showing a lion's worth of heart last night in their amazing Game 2 comeback wasn't enough, the basketball world has gotten shocked again today. Your New York Knicks have relieved President Donnie Walsh of his duties, effective immediately, in what will likely be viewed by most as a terrible, terrible decision. Our own Mark C. Rinaldi predicts the New President of Basketball Operations will either be Chris Mullin or Allan Houston. And in his own words, "as long as FIU doesn't start looking for a new head coach, I can live with it."

Pat Riley: Success Follows Him Like A Shadow

Pat Riley: Success Follows Him Like A Shadow

When one thinks of successful figures in the NBA, Pat Riley should immediately come to mind. He accomplished plenty in this league by winning championships as a player, coach and executive. He also turned more than one franchise around. It’s interesting Riley hasn’t gotten much credit for what he has done in Miami. He didn’t get praise for getting James and Bosh, which is ridiculous. Someone had to convince them. Wade is good in selling players to come to Miami, but Riley put the finishing touch by giving them a vision. Somehow, Wade would not have success in recruiting guys if Riley was not in Miami. Let’s not kid ourselves. If the Heat wins a championship this year, this tops of all Riley’s success.

LeBron James Winning A Championship This Year Would Be The Worst Thing Ever

LeBron James Winning A Championship This Year Would Be The Worst Thing Ever

For LeBron James, it will be a great moment in his career if he wins a championship, perhaps the greatest moment, but it will also be a bad day for small-market teams. His accomplishment will send a message that in order to win a championship, players need to create a super team in a big-market city. That’s what James did in going to Miami to play with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. For the New York Knicks and the Soon-to-be-Brooklyn Nets, that won’t be a problem. New York offers a place where players want to play there. It’s not like it’s Cleveland, Utah, New Jersey or Minneapolis. Still, it’s not good for the game when small-market teams have zero chance of creating what the Heat did. It’s going to be hard for them to keep their star players once they hit free agency. By then, guys could collaborate in planning where...

New York Knicks Off-Season: Five Ways To Upgrade At Head Coach

New York Knicks Off-Season: Five Ways To Upgrade At Head Coach

It is never to early to start looking toward the future, and even though I love Mike D’Antoni as the Head Coach of the New York Knicks, I am starting to feel that I may be in the minority. We've examined this debate here at the NYSD, stating why D'antoni should and shouldn't be fired. In my opinion, D’Antoni and his style of play have reenergized basketball in New York City, and for the first time since he arrived, the roster finally has players who can buy into his system. It is obvious to me that even Donnie Walsh and James Dolan are not sold on D’Antoni as the head coach for the future of the franchise because he enters the 2011-12 season without an extension. It may be because of the fact that there are so many high profile head coaching candidates available, or set to become available in...

New York Knicks Off-Season: Five Ways To Upgrade At The Center Position

New York Knicks Off-Season: Five Ways To Upgrade At The Center Position

Center? Yes please! The New York Knicks came into the 2010-11 season with three guys listed as centers: Mozgov, Turiaf, and Curry. Needless to say pickings were slim for Coach Mike D’Antoni and crew. The Knicks got by with playing Amar’e down low and just trying to use speed and agility to out-maneuver their opponents. Offensively it worked, but when it came to rebounding and help defense the Knicks were at a horrible disadvantage, and it cost them down the stretch. With the Knicks getting so much offense from STAT and Melo at the 3-4, the center position can basically be half of a player who concentrates on doing the little things like defense and rebounding. Here are a few guys who could be made available this off season that the Knicks should go after hard.

New York Knicks Off-Season: Five Ways To Upgrade At Power Forward

New York Knicks Off-Season: Five Ways To Upgrade At Power Forward

Along with Dirk Nowitzki, Amar’e Stoudemire was the class of the NBA when it came to the power forward position. Amar’e is easily more familiar with the Mike D’Antoni style offense then any other player on the team, but he can’t play every minute of every game. In fact, you can argue that the New York Knicks over-used him down the stretch, and this overuse ended up hurting them in the playoffs. Needless to say, the Knicks need to add veteran depth at the position, someone who can bang his way to ten rebounds and four blocks and pick up a few garbage buckets each game. Here are five guys that could help the Knicks off of the bench immediately.

New York Knicks Off-Season: Five Ways To Upgrade At Small Forward

New York Knicks Off-Season: Five Ways To Upgrade At Small Forward

The Mike D’Antoni system is so good because they like to play everyone down a position and run. Doing so guarantees that the Knicks player will be faster and more athletic then the guy guarding him. Now with Carmelo locked up for the foreseeable future the Knicks need to find another small forward to run with him and behind him. But don't look at this guy as just a nameless face picking up the unimportant minutes Carmelo Anthony doesn't want. The Knicks were at their best last season when they had Chandler and Gallinari running the wings. Obviously a second three would be ideal. So here are five guys that the Knicks could acquire in the off season to, if nothing else, at least make life a little more interesting in Manhattan. Of the five positions, small forward is probably the easiest one to upgrade because there are so many...
