Remember Him? – Joe Torre Calls It A Career

So long, Joe. ESPN is reporting that current Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre plans to retire at the end of the season. He will be replaced by former Yankee Don Mattingly. We'll have to do a separate Remember Him? for Don, however, as today our focus is on the 70-year old man riding the horse off into the sunset. The list of accomplishments on Torre's resume is long, but the ones he'll be remembered for around here will managing the Yanks to the playoffs in every one of his 12 seasons, including four World Series Championships.

Digest Editor Calls Orioles Series vs. Yankees “Their World Series”

By Cooper L. Train -- Big ups to NY Sports Digest Senior Editor Eric Marmon, who had an article published at ATHBaseball.com this morning. The piece, which features a nice profile-shot of the fictional George Constanza and former Yankee manager Buck Showalter, discussed the Yankee three-game-set in Baltimore this weekend. The O's, who have been out of contention since, eh, 1998, have shown a bit of a pulse since Showalter was named manager a few weeks after the All-Star break.

WEDNESDAY MORNING DINGERS: What K-Rod Texts, Ines Is Inappropriate, And The Yankees Take Back First

Happy Hump Day everybody.... just a friendly reminder, "Hump Day" is a phrase not to be taken literally, despite what that old lady tried to do to you on the subway this morning. She was probably just overexcited about all the primary voting yesterday. Exciting stuff, if you've been following the Kelly Ayotte vs. Ovide Lamontagne Thrilla In New Hampshilla. For the rest of us, it was just another day, albeit with a lot more rubbish & flyers on the ground... Some quick-hits from around the City this morning:

Is Nick Swisher The New Jeremy Shockey?

Is Nick Swisher The New Jeremy Shockey?

With football season starting and baseball season about to climax I have noticed a lot of similarities between The Yankees right fielder Nick Swisher and the Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey. Not so much the Jeremy Shockey of today but definitely the flamboyant Shockey of 2005.

Jeter’s Contract Talk Looms As Season Nears End

By Anthony Strait - It seems impossible that Derek Jeter could finish his career in anything but Yankee pinstripes. But with the Yankees policy of not negotiating contracts in season, the Captains current contract situation could hang over like a cloud as the Yankees inch closer to the postseason. With hardball negotiation tactics and uncertainty lying ahead; the unthinkable could happen-Jeter playing for another team. Jeter will turn 37 next season and it is obvious his o

Yankees Face A Race To The Finish In The AL East

By Anthony Strait -- Headed into the final month of the regular season, the only thing that will be certain with the American League East race is that it will be a photo finish. All season long, the Yankees and Rays have battled and traded places between first and second place. This writer had the pleasure of attending a Rays/Yanks match up back in May. That night Carlos Pena homered twice and the Rays beat up Andy Pettitte to an 8-5 win. Little did anyone leaving Yankee Stadium that night realize that it would be the start of a season long marathon with a division title at stake.

New York Yankee Thoughts… a la Cenz

By Vincent Z. Mercogliano In first post for NY Sports Digest, the man known to many as "The Cenz" gives us his current thoughts on the Defending Champion New York Yankees So here's the deal. A few friends of mine from NY Sports Digest have been in my ear about this website they've started up, so I decided to check it out. I really like the idea of a site that is willing to allow for extensive coverage of all NY sports teams, beyond your same-old game stories and recaps. For the sake of releasing my own creativity (and hopefully entertaining a few of you), I'll be contributing from time to time when the motivation strikes

Roger Clemens Guilty Plea Shows Divergent Path From Andy Pettitte

August 31, 2010
clemns

By Harry Doyle -- Is there any wonder why New York fans will always have special a place in their heart for Yankees lefty Andy Pettitte? Yankee fans might be anxious about Pettitte this year heading into the pennant race; his strained left groin has left some wondering whether or not they will be able to rely on the 16-year veteran as the team hunts down its second World Series title in a row. But those who are worried abut the present should be thankful to what Pettitte did in the past. No, not his five World Series rings or his 240 career wins; I'm talking about his admission to using human growth hormone (HGH) in 2007.

How Manny Could Still Kill The Yanks.

How Manny Could Still Kill The Yanks.

I still remember the day well, my father called me up right after school had ended and asked me if I wanted to go to the big game, Red Sox Yankees Game 7 2003 ALCS, loser goes home, winner goes to the World Series. First pitch of the 11th inning Wakefield leaves one up and Aaron Boone sent it into the leftfield sky line cementing his place in Yankee highlight reels for eternity....
