Rangers Get Huge Assist, Claim Final Playoff Spot vs. Washington

After laying an egg Thursday night on home ice versus the lonely Atlanta Thrashers, your New York Rangers were reduce to praying to the hockey gods going into their final game. A win over the arch-rival New Jersey Devils Saturday afternoon, plus a loss of any kind by the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday night would give the Rangers the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Head Coach John Tortorella should send his former team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, a thank you basket as the Rangers win coping with Tampa’s 6-2 win later in the evening gave New York the 8th and final playoff spot and a date against the top seeded Washington Capitals starting Wednesday. A 5-2 win over New Jersey was an uphill climb when the Devils struck early and late in the first period to take leads-but an unlikely source help lift New York. Team Captain...

Déjà vu For Rangers As Season Hangs In Balance

"All we've lost is the control. You have to hope for help," said Tortorella, who called his club flat. "Obviously, we have to watch the scoreboard before we play our next game." For the second straight season that is what it will come down to. The Hurricanes own the tie-breaker so New York does not hold their own destiny. Tortorella and his club have no one to blame but themselves for being in the predicament. One year after their disappointing defeat on the last day, we get to see what lesson this young team took from it. It could be the difference between playing against next week and not playing another game till October.

Despite Injuries, Rangers Primed For A Second Half Push

By Anthony Strait -- As the New York Rangers entered the second half of the season, it’s a bit amazing that they find themselves in a playoff spot at the moment with all they had to overcome. NHL Winter Classic: Next Stop New York?

By Anthony Strait -- The date was January 1, 2008 and what we saw that afternoon was the start of what has become a fantastic tradition. In a snowy Ralph Wilson Stadium, Sidney Crosby won the game in a shootout as Commissioner Gary Bettman and the brain trusts at NBC scored a big one for hockey. The following year’s classic at Wrigley Field yielded the highest ratings in 33 years for the sport. Now a stable of New Year’s Day and a premiere event, it is about time that it comes to the Big Apple either next season or after that (or both).

New York Rangers Christmas Wish List

New York Rangers Christmas Wish List

Most children growing up get to put together a Christmas wish list, which our parents would "deliver to Santa Claus" to make sure he knew exactly what we wanted. So if Santa's powers were sports-related, and you could assemble a Christmas list for one of your teams that would get sent up to the North Pole and magically appear under the tree the next morning, what would it be? Without further ado, Michael Block gives you the Rangers Christmas list...

The Worst Week In NY Sports EVER??

The Worst Week In NY Sports EVER??

By Michael Block -- It’s not very often that nearly every team in a city that hosts nine major professional teams across four sports fails in critical situations. New York has seen 46* championships, by far more than any other city, and is thus not accustomed to losing. So for every team to flop simultaneously is shocking and disheartening, to say the least, and it would be surprising if there has been a New York sports week filled with as much disappointment and failure as this one.

Spectator Bridges Add New Perspective To Mediocrity

Spectator Bridges Add New Perspective To Mediocrity

By Anthony Strait -- When the head honchos at Madison Square Garden announced plans for renovating the 42 year old building, I thought was about time. As historic as the Garden has been its apparent that it’s age is showing. No, I don’t mean the building is coming apart although there was that asbestos scare that cancelled a Knicks game last month. For all the newly build arenas in sports the Garden just seemed like it was fading away much like the championship memories that made it the historical icon it is. Crammed concourse areas, boxed in seating, and the hundreds of events have worn down the venue. The renovations plans are much welcome with all the new arenas being built from scratch. This week however, one innovation has this writer wondering what are they thinking?

Rangers BRAWL For Oil; Big Fight In Third Vs Edmonton

By Cooper L. Train -- We've been accused of not paying enough attention to the city's two hockey teams here at the NY Sports Digest. But you can bet, as sure as a few extra years on Derek Jeter's contract, when something like the fight that took place in yesterdays 8-2 win for the New York Rangers happens, we're going to have some video on it.
