Been awhile since we've had a Mensch of the Week, which is why this week we're going to have four. Tonight from six to eight pm at Lord & Taylor Court in the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, NJ, New York Giants stars Justin Tuck, Michael Boley, Prince Amukamara and Dave Tollefson will be signing autographs for individuals who donate new unwrapped toys and books. It's been a couple of weeks since we had a proper Mensch of the Week here at the NY Sports Digest, but hey, the event we're writing about happened a few weeks ago anyway. So we're all even. The New York Jets third-year quarterback Mark Sanchez presented a $25,000 check to the Tuesday's Children Charity, which helps to support families affected by the terrorist attacks on 9/11.
There are a lot of words fans of the New York Giants would have used to describe tight end and former G-MAN Jeremy Shockey. None of said fans would likely use the word "Mensch." Until this week, that is, as it was widely reported that Shockey, now a Carolina Panther, saved teammate Ben Hartsock from choking to death.
Well I spent the whole morning boarding up my house preparing for Hurricane Shitfest Irene, and once I finally ran out of wood I found this story on a rookie wide reciever for the Baltimore Ravens, Tandon Doss, who made a quick pit stop before his latest preseason game to, ykno, casually stop a brutal stabbing.
New York Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson has teamed up with The American Heartworm Society to educate pet owners about the dangers of heartworm disease. For this, and because of our overall excitement that the NFL season is just a few weeks away, one of my favorite football players is our Mensch of the Week.
Sure, this happened a few weeks back, but it's never too late to give some props to a truly stand-up guy committing a truly stand-up deed. This week's Mensch of the Week: Yankees catcher Russell Martin.
The goal of our Mensch of the Week feature is to celebrate the actions of a professional athlete off the field that have helped to strengthen their community. Tragically, this week we will be focusing on something that occurred inside the field rather than off of it.
We've been very hard on New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards here at the NY Sports Digest, all of it justified. Being an overrated wide out is one thing. But when you get into the driver's seat of a car intoxicated (in a city with more cabs than most countries, and your employer offers a free 24-hr anonymous car service), AND THEN six-months later you get quoted saying it wasn't really your fault, well... we're gonna tell you what the score is. However, when someone does something right, we're going to celebrate them for it. Which is why Braylon Edwards is this week's Mensch of the Week
Previously in our Mensch of the Week column, where we recognize the positive deeds or actions of a professional athlete, we try to stick to sports stars with a New York City connection, either through birth or place of employment. This weeks winner, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Leonard Pope, is neither; he was born in Americus, Georgia, stayed in-state for his college ball, and played in both Arizona and KC... but never for New York. But last weekend he did save a six year old kid from drowning. And that's good enough for us.
