Weekly Sports Nickel: March Madness, Pettitte, & The Future of the Knicks

March 17, 2012

Little delay on the Sports Nickel this week. Had a strange kind of madness to deal with last night; a close relative returned from Honduras with a necklace made of human teeth, which they wouldn't allow her to bring through customs. She's still stuck in Miami as I type this, but the fact remains there's little I can do from here. Best to just Stay Calm and maintain my status quo. Which for today, means writing about sports...

Yesterday Was A Pretty Good Day To Be Carmelo Anthony

Yesterday Was A Pretty Good Day To Be Carmelo Anthony

Yesterday was a great day for Carmelo Anthony. He found out that there was a report about him being unhappy about Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni. He treated the sportswriters as if they were dumb by denying it in shoot-around. Then, he had his way when the Knicks coach was ordered to quit by Knicks CEO James Dolan. To top it off, Anthony led the Knicks with 16 points by being a ballhog all game long in last night’s 121-79 victory over the Trail Blazers. After the game, Anthony smiled for the first time all year. It was like he was reborn again.

Mike D’Antoni Is A Bad Chef

March 15, 2012
Mike D’Antoni Is A Bad Chef

The reported story goes like this: Knicks brass went to D'Antoni and told him to meet with Melo, collaborate on a way to make the system and the star blend seamlessly and produce victories. For a great basketball talent and a great basketball mind, this should be a fairly reasonable task. D'Antoni refused. When told the meeting wasn't optional, D'Antoni quit. And yet, it's Melo who will be labelled the malcontent. What gives?

Knicks Fire D’Antoni, Carmelo Becomes Marbury

Knicks Fire D’Antoni, Carmelo Becomes Marbury

It’s official. This is Stephon Marbury all over again. The Knicks thought Carmelo Anthony would be a player that would take them to a championship level. They felt the same way about Marbury when they acquired him in 2004. Like Marbury, Anthony has done nothing but lose games for the Knicks. Like Anthony, Marbury has been a malcontent. And just like the man formerly known as Starbury, Melo has gotten his coach fired.

Knicks Lose Five Straight: Hate the Coach, Not The Players

Knicks Lose Five Straight: Hate the Coach, Not The Players

By Eric Marmon Your New York Knicks returned from a brutal road trip of losses yesterday with a chance to send a message to the division, the league, and the fans by taking a tough but winnable battle against one of the NBAs higher-tier teams. Instead, they fell flat on their faces in an embarrassing display of basketball inepititude, losing to the Philadelphia 76ers by a 106-94 score that felt way worse than those numbers dictate. As I wrote last week, the only chance the Knicks have of making this lockout-shortened season a success is by winning the division. That hope feels more like a pipe dream today, with Mike D’Antoni’s crew looking at a six-and-a-half game difference between themselves and the division leading Sixers. To put that number in perspective, the 12th-seeded New Jersey Nets are closer to overtaking the Knicks for the 8th seed than the Knicks are to Philly. With...

Why The Knicks Need To Win The Atlantic

March 8, 2012
Why The Knicks Need To Win The Atlantic

Linsanity has turned to despair. Your New York Knicks, losers of there last three games, are now a depressing 3-6 since the end of their Jeremy Lin Driven seven game winning streak, including a 105-118 loss last night to the San Antonio Spurs. If they don't turn things up soon, and get themselves atop the Atlantic Division, expect the Sword of Damocles to come down upon Madison Square Garden.

February 2012 – The Greatest Month In NY Sports History??

March 1, 2012

The month of February is normally categorized in many ways. The shortest month of the year is one. It is also Black History Month in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and holds Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, Groundhog Day and Ash Wednesday in its tinny 28 (29) day frame. In the sports world it’s usually the month we are stuck between the end of football and the start of spring training. However this year, for New York, February of 2012 may be remembered as one of the wildest and most successful five weeks ever. From Super Bowls to first place teams and even an overnight underdog phenomenon that’s revitalized a sleeping franchise, New York sports has never seen a stretch where everything seemingly fell into the right place at the right time. The stars certainly aligned and shined brightly on the Big Apple...

Heat Send Knicks A Message

February 24, 2012

The Miami Heat heard enough of Jeremy Lin and the New York Knicks the past few weeks. They were clearly tired of it They expressed their frustration by taking it out on the poor Knickerbockers last night in their 102-82 blowout victory at American Airlines Center. They played well for all four quarters, never letting up and turning what was one a contest into a destruction.
