January 26, 1893 – Abner Doubleday, who persistently denied ever having anything to do with starting baseball, but was involved in the start the Civil War as a Union General in Fort Sumter, dies at age 74.

January 26, 1944 – Mark James Roth, who as a sportswriter for the Globe created the name “Yankees,” dies at age 62.

January 26, 1951 - Giant Mel Ott is elected to MLB Hall-of-Fame.

January 26, 1955 – Yankee legend Joe Dimaggio is elected to MLB Hall-of-Fame.

January 26, 1960 - Alvin “Pete” Rozell is elected NFL commissioner.

January 26, 1961 - Birthday of Ranger Hall-of-Famer Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky.

January 26, 1970 – Birthday of Jets running back Ronald Moore.

January 26, 1980 – Ranger Lynn Patrick dies at age 67.
