January 22, 1929 - Yankees announce that they will put numbers on the backs of their uniforms, becoming the 1st MLB team to use them for all positions.

January 22, 1943 - Yankees acquire Nick Etten.

January 22, 1951 - Yankee Phil Rizzuto is named Professional Athlete of the Year.

January 22, 1953Giants draft offensive lineman and future 9x pro-bowler Roosevelt “Rosey” Brown in the 27th round.

January 22, 1957 - Birthday of Islander great Mike Bossy.

January 22, 1961 - Ranger Dean Prentice gets his 3rd NHL career hat-trick in a 5-3 win over Detroit.

January 22, 1966 – Birthday of Jets guard Carlton Haselrig.

January 22, 1970 – Birthday of Giants tackle Keith Wagner.

January 22, 1981 - Islanders get their 40th shutout in franchise history (goalie Billy Smith’s NHL career 15th) with a 3-0 win over Detroit.

January 22, 1997 - Yankee great Don Mattingly announces his retirement after 13 seasons with the team.

January 22, 2001 – Mets star outfielder and 1966 AL ROY Tommy Agee dies at age 58.

January 22, 2008 - Mets and Endy Chavez agree on a $3.85 million 2 year contract.

January 22, 2009 - Former Yankee and Giants 3rd baseman Billy Werber dies at age 100. He was both the oldest surviving teammate and opponent of Babe Ruth.

January 22. 2010 - Mets acquire Gary Matthews, Jr.

January 22, 1994 – The East beats the West in the NHL All-Star game held at MSG. Ranger goalie Mike Richter is named MVP.

January 22. 2012 – Giants win the NFC title game to advance to Super Bowl XLVI with a 20-17 OT victory over San Francisco.
