Is Jorge Posada Quitting??

Your New York Yankees are in the middle of Game 2 against the Boston Red Sox, a classic CC Sabathia vs. Josh Beckett battle. But that storyline has taken a back seat to the absence of Jorge Posada, who apparently didn’t like being put in the No. 9 spot in the Yankees lineup and asked to be removed.

This has immediately led to speculation that Posada, who has been woeful as the team’s primary designated hitter, batting WAY below the Mendoza Line, might consider retiring. But this doesn’t seem likely. Posada is a lifetime Yankee who bleeds pinstripes, one of the remaining four from the 96-98-99-00 dynasty, and a future Hall of Famer. He is far too proud to simply quit and hang up his cleats in the middle of May, especially when a sixth championship is a very realistic possibility. Additionally, with a little over thirteen-MILLION-dollars left on his contract, it seems unbelievable that Posada would just simply walk away from such a large pile of money. This isn’t Cliff Lee we’re talking about.

The logical guess is that this was simply a proud, but struggling player, overly frustrated. We’re talking about a guy who was never hot on the idea of being a Designated Hitter to begin with. For years Posada has fought the role, preferring to be the Bronx Bombers guy behind the plate, and one of the biggest questions of the season was how the former C would adapt to being the DH.

Most Yankee fans would probably agree, the chances of seeing Jorge Posada back on the diamond Sunday afternoon are extremely high.

Yahoo Sports did a great job of breaking down the entire Jorge Posada-gate timeline from last night, worth checking out if you’re one of the normal people who did something other than spend your Saturday night on Twitter.
